‘Respect the City’ for responsible tourism in Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik is one of the most attractive destinations in the Mediterranean, and the cruise industry is an important contributor to its economy. Dubrovnik has created a systematic approach to solving issues such as tourism growth with measures including careful planning of cruise arrivals and departures, embedded in an MOU signed by the city and CLIA. Thanks to continuous efforts, a balanced destination policy, engagement of local stakeholders, and projects such as ‘Respect the City’, efforts have received international recognition. In 2019, the Global Council for Sustainable Tourism (GSTC) conducted a destination assessment, funded by CLIA, which reported on inclusion and community benefits, management of cultural assets, and natural resources. The city achieved an excellent 70% score for its sustainability performance, confirming the dedicated work that has made Dubrovnik a favourite cruise destination.

In cooperation with the Dubrovnik Tourist Board, the city has now created an animated video that introduces viewers to the rules of behaviour for visitors in the historic core of Dubrovnik. Mayor Mato Frankovic pointed out that the goal of this campaign was to educate tourists.

“This animated film is a way of communicating with our guests, in order to inform them what is appropriate behaviour during their visit. Our goal is not to fine them, but to familiarize them in a simple way with what is acceptable behaviour in a protected UNESCO heritage site”, said Dubrovnik Mayor, Mato Frankovic.
