Supporting Science and Conservation in Iceland

Iceland Travel operates a tour to Skalanes Nature Reserve for cruise lines visiting the port of Seyðisfjörður. The Skálanes Nature, Heritage & Culture centre in East Iceland works in research, teaching and conservation, and has been growing in scale and capacity since its founding in 2005. Visitors and groups from cruise and expedition ships to Skalanes and on local tours in the area of Seyðisfjördur, have been instrumental in supporting educational outreach and internal funding for Skalanes´s mission.

“The added influx of guests interested in informative day tours has made it possible to offer diverse employment in a small community, supporting science and pragmatic conservation work. Thus, promoting a real synergy in the three pillars of sustainability in environmental, societal and economics.”
Ólafur Örn Pétursson, Founding Director of Skalanes, Post-Graduate Researcher in Environmental Geography
